Aman, Four Seasons, Orient Express and The Ritz-Carlton have all taken to the water. A guide to the four yacht collections redefining luxury at sea — and how to choose between them.

Four months in the Japanese year carry the top rating: April, May, October and November. But ground services in Japan need at least nine to twelve months' notice, and that decides the question more often than the weather does. Our view on which of the four to take.
Vanatara Journeys is a travel advisory in Bangkok and Singapore. We work in partnership with 360 Private Travel, and one of the practical things that partnership gives us is a month-by-month record for each destination we sell — a seasonal rating out of five, temperature and rainfall, and notes from the destination management companies that run the ground services.
For Japan, four months carry the top rating: April, May, October and November. Everything else sits at three out of five or below. Any agency in the same network can tell you that much. What follows is our own view of which of the four to take — and of the piece of booking arithmetic that decides it more often than the weather does.

The guidance we work to is to allow at least nine to twelve months for ground services in Japan, because experienced guides and key services are often secured well in advance.
That is worth taking literally. It is not advice about peak-season hotel rooms; it is about the people who make a trip work. The same pattern turns up in corners of the calendar nobody would predict. The record flags the opening fortnight of January as a difficult time to book guides and activities, other than in the ski areas — nothing in the weather tells you that, and it is the sort of thing you only learn by running into it.
Counting from the middle of August, and measuring to the middle of each month except where a month falls either side of the line:
October 2027.
The reasoning is not complicated. October carries the top rating, and the record describes it as one of the best months to visit Japan — cooler autumn conditions, the onset of the famous autumn foliage, 15°C to 25°C. It is also the first of the four top months that sits well clear of the nine-month floor rather than scraping it, which means the trip can be built properly instead of around whatever is still open. When the month you want and the month you can arrange are the same month, most of the difficulty goes away.
One honesty note about the record itself: October's written notes call the weather generally dry, while the rainfall field for the same month reads moderate. The record disagrees with itself, so we would not lean on October being the driest of the four. It is the warmer of the two autumn months, and that is a claim the figures do support.
The alternatives, as we would rank them:
November 2027 if landscape is the point more than cities. Crisp air, autumn foliage, generally clear weather, 10°C to 18°C — and the only one of the four that the record puts at low to moderate rainfall rather than moderate. Our choice for a second or third visit to Japan, and for anyone who would rather be outdoors than at dinner.
May 2027 if you would rather go in spring, and if the decision is made now. The record has May as warm and sunny, 12°C to 25°C, ideal for being outdoors, and Kyoto in May as serene, with greenery having replaced the cherry blossoms. That is the trade, and we think it is the right way round — you give up the blossom photographs and you get the country back. Take the back half of the month if you can; the front half sits under the guidance.

April 2027 only if cherry blossom is genuinely the point. Peak blossom across most of Japan, clear skies, 8°C to 20°C, and on the record it earns the billing. But at about eight months it is now under the guidance, so it is the month where a late decision costs you most, and we would rather talk you into May — or into April 2028, where there is room to do it properly.
Of the remaining eight months, June is the one we would steer you away from: high rainfall, and two out of five — the lowest rating any month in Japan carries, shared with January, February and December.
When they do not, the destination management companies that 360 works with in Japan offer two suggestions.
The first is off-peak travel, in Japan's shoulder seasons, which they say still offer exceptional experiences with fewer crowds. We would read March as the shoulder month closest to the peak — three out of five, 2°C to 15°C — though for 2027 it is only seven months away, which is further under the guidance than April. March 2028 is the version of that idea with room in it.
The second is to travel outside the typical tourist trail. Their argument is that the lesser-known regions often provide a more authentic and enriching itinerary while easing the pressure on availability — worth noting, because those two things rarely point the same way. Our qualification: this is the better second or third trip to Japan, not a substitute for a first one. If you have never been, see Kyoto.
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko is our choice for a returning traveller in autumn. It is a hotel for a couple, or for anyone whose idea of a week away is landscape, quiet and early nights. It is the wrong choice for a family trying to see Japan in ten days, and we would say so rather than sell you the room.
What earns it: at 94 rooms and suites it is small enough that the setting, not the hotel, stays the centre of the day — and the rooms are designed with private balconies over Lake Chuzenji or Mount Nantai, so what you look at in the morning is the reason you came.
HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa is our default in Kyoto — for a first visit, and for families. If you want seclusion, it is not the one.
Position is the argument. It stands on the historic site of the Mitsui family residence, adjacent to Nijo-jo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site — so in a busy month one of Kyoto's major sites is on the doorstep instead of at the end of a journey. It is a larger house — the record's property-size field puts it at 160 — with a natural thermal spring spa and Kyoto French cooking at TOKI.
Both are subject to availability, and in the months above that is not a formality.
If you asked us today we would say October 2027 in Kyoto, and November 2027 in Nikko if you have been before and want the other kind of trip. If spring matters more than either, May 2027, decided this year rather than next.
None of that requires hurrying. It requires deciding earlier than feels natural, which is a different thing, and it is a fair description of most of what we do.
If Japan is somewhere you are considering, we would be glad to talk it through and tell you plainly what is open and what is not.
