Japan has four good months. Here is the one we would book.

Four months in the Japanese year carry the top rating: April, May, October and November. But ground services in Japan need at least nine to twelve months' notice, and that decides the question more often than the weather does. Our view on which of the four to take.

Ponant, Considered: Expedition Cruising on a Human Scale

Ponant's small-ship expedition voyages, considered: Namibia to Cape Town, the Seychelles under sail, and the high Arctic — with Virtuoso preferred-partner benefits when you book through an advisor.

Most cruise ships are floating resorts. Ponant's are closer to well-run country houses that happen to move — small, French-flagged, and built for coastlines that larger vessels cannot reach. For travellers who want the far places without giving up a proper cellar, a spa, and a cabin with a view, the French line occupies a category of its own. Here is how we assess Ponant at Vanatara Journeys, and three voyages worth a conversation.

Why Ponant is different

Scale is the beginning of it. Ponant's Explorers-class ships carry a fraction of the passengers of a conventional cruise liner, and every stateroom faces the sea. Dining draws on the line's French heritage, with menus shaped under the guidance of Alain Ducasse's teams. Zodiacs and naturalist guides come as standard on expedition sailings, which means the ship is a means of arrival, not the destination itself.

The line's environmental positioning is unusually substantive for the category. The fleet carries Clean Ship certification, and its polar flagship — Le Commandant Charcot — pairs an ice-capable hull with hybrid LNG-electric propulsion. For clients who ask hard questions about how their travel touches fragile places, Ponant has better answers than most.

The fleet, briefly

The Explorers class. Six sister ships — intimate, contemporary, all-balcony vessels designed for warm-water and temperate expedition routes, from Indonesia to the Kimberley.

Le Commandant Charcot. The polar vessel: a hybrid-powered ship built for high-latitude ice, opening routes in the Arctic and Antarctic that conventional expedition ships do not attempt.

Le Ponant. The original three-masted sailing yacht, refitted for a small number of guests — closer to a private charter than a cruise, and suited to island archipelagos.

Three voyages worth a conversation

Namibia to South Africa

An Atlantic coastline of extremes: the dunes of the Namib meeting cold ocean, the bird-rich wetlands of Walvis Bay, the ghost town of Kolmanskop, and a finish among the vineyards and history of the Cape. It suits travellers who have done the classic safari and want Africa from a different angle — the sea.

The Seychelles, under sail

One hundred and fifteen islands of granite and coral, best reached by a small vessel that can anchor where the crowds cannot. Marine national parks, giant tortoises on Curieuse, and beaches that reward arriving by tender. As a sailing itinerary it pairs naturally with a few nights at one of our preferred-partner resorts on Mahé or Praslin before or after.

The high Arctic

Spitsbergen, East Greenland, Iceland: fjords, tundra and bird cliffs at latitudes where silence is the main event. Polar sailings book far ahead and are seasonal by nature — timing, cabin category and route vary year to year, which is exactly where advisor guidance earns its keep.

Why book Ponant through an advisor

Cruise fares are broadly consistent across booking channels. What differs is what surrounds the booking. Through our Virtuoso affiliation and preferred-partner relationships, Ponant sailings booked with Vanatara Journeys can include amenities such as shipboard credit, and — on participating departures — access to Virtuoso Voyages hosted events and curated shore experiences, subject to availability and varying by sailing. Beyond the amenities, you have one named advisor who knows your voyage: matching you to the right ship and cabin, arranging flights and pre- and post-cruise stays, and remaining reachable if anything changes mid-journey.

Practical notes

Expedition itineraries are seasonal: southern Africa sailings favour the austral spring and summer, the Seychelles is a year-round destination with calmer seas outside the monsoon transitions, and Arctic voyages run in the northern summer. Cabins on small ships sell out quietly and early — for polar routes, planning a year or more ahead is normal, not excessive.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ponant suitable for travellers who don't speak French? Yes. Sailings are bilingual French and English, and the international mix of guests is part of the line's character.

How formal is life on board? Refined but relaxed. Expedition sailings are practical by day; evenings are smart-casual rather than black-tie.

Are Ponant expedition cruises suitable for families? On selected itineraries and school-holiday departures, yes — though the most remote expedition routes suit older children and adults best. We advise case by case.

What is included in the fare? Typically open-bar dining and most onboard amenities, with expedition activities included on expedition sailings. Inclusions vary by ship and route — your advisor will confirm the details for any voyage you are considering.

When should I book? For polar and eclipse-style event sailings, twelve to eighteen months ahead. For warm-water routes, six to twelve months gives the best cabin choice.
