The New Art of Cruising by Yacht

Aman, Four Seasons, Orient Express and The Ritz-Carlton have all taken to the water. A guide to the four yacht collections redefining luxury at sea — and how to choose between them.

When most people hear the word “cruise,” they picture large ships, bustling decks and regimented schedules. Yacht cruising is a different proposition entirely: intimate settings, elegantly appointed suites, thoughtful service and a far more leisurely rhythm — all while allowing you to unpack just once.

Aman, Four Seasons, Orient Express and The Ritz-Carlton have each taken to the water, creating yachts that feel less like cruise ships and more like extraordinary hotels that happen to move.

The question is no longer “Do I want to cruise?” but rather “How do I want to experience the world?”

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

If you would like to dip a toe into yacht cruising, Ritz-Carlton is perhaps the easiest introduction of all. The scale differs meaningfully across the fleet: Evrima carries 298 guests across 149 suites, while Ilma and Luminara carry 448 and 452 respectively — still a world away from conventional cruising, but worth knowing if intimacy is what drew you.

Expect all-suite accommodation with private ocean-view terraces, multiple dining venues, a spa, and a signature Marina platform for kayaking straight off the back of the yacht.

The real draw is the breadth of itineraries: the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, plus upcoming journeys to French Polynesia, Hawaii, the South Pacific and Asia-Pacific. Some linger overnight after the day-trippers have gone; others are themed around wine, golf, food, culture and adventure.

Four Seasons Yachts

Four Seasons I made her maiden voyage in March 2026, and she is the natural choice for anyone who loves the brand's intuitive service. At 207 metres she has just 95 suites and a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio, with many suites offering expansive terraces and private plunge pools, all inspired by the golden age of yachting.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and generous indoor-outdoor living create a feeling of residential life at sea, alongside a focus on culinary experiences, integrative wellness, art and design. Suites also connect — in configurations sleeping eight, ten, twelve, fourteen or twenty — which makes her unusually capable for families and groups travelling together.

For first-time cruisers, this is not the traditional cruise experience; it is Four Seasons from a whole new perspective. Coming soon: Four Seasons II launches in 2028 with just 79 suites and new residential-style accommodation.

Orient Express Sailing Yachts

At 220 metres, Orient Express Corinthian is the world's largest sailing yacht in service, carrying just 110 guests in 54 suites beneath three immense solid sails. There is real romance in travelling under sail — watching the canvas rise, feeling the yacht respond to the wind — and every suite has panoramic sea views to keep the scenery front and centre.

Itineraries trace the Adriatic, the Greek Islands and the Rivieras, calling at Venice, Dubrovnik, Portofino, Capri, Palermo and the Côte d'Azur, while a partnership with Guerlain brings a focus on wellbeing on board. Distinctly French without ever feeling formal, she is one for those who appreciate craftsmanship and believe the journey should be part of the story.

Aman at Sea

Aman's first ocean-going yacht, Amangati, launches in 2027 with just 94 guests across 47 suites, bringing the brand's hallmarks of peace, privacy and understated design to journeys across the Mediterranean and beyond.

Expect expansive suites, immersive wellness and days shaped entirely around you: a wander ashore, an afternoon in the spa, or simply a quiet corner to watch the coastline slip past. Made for those who value privacy above all else, her maiden voyage is one of the most anticipated arrivals in luxury hospitality at sea.

Something more intimate: Amandira, Aman's 52-metre traditional Indonesian phinisi, has just five cabins and a dedicated crew, exploring remote Indonesian waters from Komodo to Raja Ampat.

So, which yacht is for you? Ritz-Carlton's balance of familiar luxury and discovery, the home-from-home ease of Four Seasons, the romance of Orient Express under sail, or the stillness of Aman.

Whichever calls to you, your suite comes with you, the horizon keeps changing, and you never have to choose between the journey and the destination.

If you are weighing these, we would be glad to talk it through and help you find the one that is right for you.

Japan has four good months. Here is the one we would book.

Four months in the Japanese year carry the top rating: April, May, October and November. But ground services in Japan need at least nine to twelve months' notice, and that decides the question more often than the weather does. Our view on which of the four to take.
